State of Play

State of Play

State of Play was interesting if nothing else. The action in the movie wasn’t that great and neither was the conspiracy theory that seemed to be what the actual story line was. The only thing that seemed to save this movie from going straight to dvd or tv was the all star cast that they must have paid very well to be in it including Russell Crowe, Rachael McAdams, and Ben Affleck. It mainly follows Russell Crowe and Rachael McAdams characters as they try to unravel the story for their newspaper article. Everything just seemed very predictable for a conspiracy theory movie. Over all I wasn’t that impressed with the movie and I would have to give it 3.5 out of 10 on my movie scale.

Memorable Quote(s):

Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck): You’re just seeking the truth. You’re a truth seeker. You can’t help it, that is just who you are. You’re such a hypocrite. You’re not interested in me. You come in here, it’s all about you and you getting your story. I trusted you. You’re my friend! You were supposed to be my friend anyway.

Iron Man

Fantastic movie. I think this is one of the top 10 movies on my list. Then again its hard to beat the super hero movies that have come out lately. With a great cast including Robert Downy Jr., Gweneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges, and Terrence Howard it was really hard to go wrong. The movie is based on the comic book series “Iron Man”. Personally I don’t know how much of the movie is true to the actual origin story of Tony Stark and Iron Man but the basics all seem to be there. One other thing to mention about the movie was that the soundtrack was excellent. The very first scene starting off with “Back in Black” by ACDC, and of course they had to throw in “Iron Man” by Black Sabbath. One thing that I will mention is that if you do watch this movie make sure to fast forward through the credits or just let them roll, because after all is said and done there is a little scene with Samuel Jackson as Agent Nick Fury and it’s a set up for the upcoming movie based on the Avengers comic books. I give this epic movie a 9.5 out of 10 on the Big Phill Movie Scale.

Memorable Quote(s):

Tony Stark (Robert Downy Jr.): “I’m sorry. This is the fun-vee. The hum-drum-vee is back there.”

Tony Stark (Robert Downy Jr.): “I shouldn’t be alive… unless it was for a reason. I’m not crazy, Pepper. I just finally know what I have to do. And I know in my heart that it’s right.”

This was a really weird movie to be honest. At first glance I thought that it might be a Tim Burton film just to give you an idea of how off the wall it might be however it was directed by Shane Acker which is not someone I’m familiar with because he’s not done anything. The movie is about 9 dolls that have been brought to life using the spirit of the scientist who created them. The underlying message of the movie seems to tell people who watch it that the desecrated world that appears in 9 is the world that we are headed towards if we continue to war amongst ourselves. The voices of the animated characters have an impecible cast including Elijah Wood, Crispin Glover, Jennifer Connelly and Martin Landau. So putting it on the Big Phill’s Movie Scale id have to give it a 4 out of 10. I just wasn’t that impressed with it on a whole.

Memorable Quote(s):

1 (Christopher Plummer): “When we awoke in this world, it was chaos. Man and machine attacked each other with fire and metal. I lead us here to sanctuary and here we waited out the war. Slowly, the world grew still until all that remained, was The Beast. Now we wait for it too to sleep.”

This was a great movie. A movie based on a book called “Taking Down the House” by Ben Mezrich. Another one of those all star casts with Kevin Space, Laurence Fishburne, and Kate Bosworth. The story is about an MIT student who has spent his entire life trying to get into Harvard Med School but doesn’t have the money to attend. During his senior year he gets the opportunity to learn how to card count on a team. It’s a very fast paced movie with a little bit of physical action and a little bit of a love sub-plot. It mainly focuses on the decisions that the main character makes regarding the card counting. I definitely recommend this for anyone looking to get away from the shoot-em up movies or the standard sports flick. 21 ranks a 8.5 out of 10 on the Big Phill Movie Scale.

Memorable Quote(s):

Ben Cambell (Jim Sturgiss): “So my senior year of college I joined this team and I learned this new skill. I went to Vegas 17 times to use it. I made hundreds of thousands of dollars counting cards. And then I had it all stolen from me, twice… How’s that for life experience professor?”

Cole Williams (Laurence Fisburne): “If I see you in here again, I will break your cheekbone with a small hammer. And then I will kill you.”

Home of the Brave

So this is my first movie review and its a little short but I have a feeling that a lot of my reviews are going to be short and to the point. Remember that these are just my opinions about the movie and will not necessarily coincide with most other movie reviews.

For those of you looking for a good war movie this is not what you are looking for. Home of the Brave is a movie that discusses what happens to soldiers when they return home from war. It focuses on the impact their homecoming has on their family and their own mental state. With an all star cast including Samuel L. Jackson and Jessica Beil it was hard not to understand the underlying message of the effects of the war on the soldiers highlighted in this wonderful movie. I personally say that this movie ranks about a 7 out of 10 and think that anyone with loved ones serving or having served themselves would enjoy this movie.

Memorable Quote(s)

Will Marsh (Samuel L. Jackson): “Wanna know what a blast wound looks like? What an OR in the desert smells like? What really happens to them? How they die? You really wanna know? You want us to come back like nothing ever happened. You don’t want to get your hands dirty with the details.”
